Named for the ancient Central Asian city of Merv, one of the great cosmopolitan centers of the storied “Silk Road,” Merv was undoubtedly a global center of knowledge and learning, science and literature, trade and exchange, and a fitting if perhaps unconventional metaphor for an academic site that envisions education not merely as a means to an end, but as a magnificent, life-changing journey in itself.
