Tutoring

So you’re thinking about working with a tutor! That’s great, but before you go down that road, take some time to think about it. Tutoring can be fantastic, but there are a few things you want to make sure to get right in order to have the best and most productive experience.

First, think about what you want from tutoring. Are you looking to pass a test, raise your grades, prepare for an upcoming course, or learn new material for its own sake? Are you looking for someone to periodically work through a few math problems, or a long-term mentor who will work intensively with you on all aspects of your educational development?

Either of those, or anything in between, is a completely valid answer, and you’ll want to make sure that you’re working with someone who understands your motivations and can work with you on that level.

My tutoring philosophy and approach center on understanding and applying concepts in a creative way. I am a huge proponent of education for its own sake, and that view has always guided my approach to teaching. I’m happy to help prepare you for an exam, but I want you to do the best you can to actually learn the material. You may think that once you’ve gotten past that unit test, you’ll never need these concepts again, but you’d be surprised how often they actually show up, unannounced, in your academic, professional, and even personal life!

For all these reasons, I always like to chat with new students first, to make sure that working with me is the right move for you. My main subjects are writing and math, although I’ve worked with students in a variety of other subjects over the years as well. If you’re interested in a particular subject that is beyond my area of expertise, I’m happy to help you find someone who will be the right fit for you.

I’m happy to offer a initial consultation, at no cost, to chat about tutoring options that can be effective for you!
