Dissertation Advice

Own the dissertation before
the dissertation owns you

Merv Academic provides highly experienced mentorship in both research and writing that can help make the arduous process of writing a dissertation less intimidating, and can help provide structure, guidance, and editorial advice.

I’ve been through the rigors of the academic research trajectory myself, first as a doctoral student, and then as a postdoctoral researcher, and I’ve since been able to draw on my own experience to work with many research students across a wide range of disciplines. I absolutely understand the emotional, psychological, and often physical pressures and traumas that comprise the writing of a dissertation, a journal article, or a research proposal. It’s not easy, nor is it meant to be. Writer’s block can knock you out of commission for days (or weeks!) and the dreaded “imposter syndrome” can be enough to make you want to throw in the towel. Sometimes it can be helpful to have someone on the outside (i.e. not your adviser) act as a sounding board, or provide research perspectives, or provide comment on a draft. Or perhaps you’re completely new to research and aren’t even sure where to begin.

If any of this resonates with you, I can certainly help! Happy to meet with you for a free consultation, either by phone or online (or in person, if you’re in the Boston area).
